99¢ Futures, 2011 Proposal for BAM Public Art fund
The neighborhood surrounding BAM is a very transparent environment. The cultural, social and economic factors are visually reflected in people’s attire and behavior, as well as the many storefronts in the environment. The current constellation is a unique moment in the neighborhood’s history where pawn shops, blow out sales, 99c stores and bodegas coexist with the cultural programming of BAM.
A small scene of startups and other up and coming. However, the existing constellation is and always has been subject to change. With this proposal we imagine how the constellation might develop in the future, under the influence of a new cultural, economic and technological reality. What if new developments in science and technology redefine economic priorities?
Our project is to develop and build a mockup storefront of the bodega of the future.We want to create a physical space that allows a discussion about how we will live and that will engage with the local Downtown Brooklyn community. We spend a long time in the neighborhood and are excited about the chance to produce work with BAM celebrating the richness of Downtown Brooklyn and creating a platform to discuss and visualize possible futures of our neighborhood.
